USA Today (Monday edition/10/15/) is reporting
that Eliot Spitzer, New York's Attorney General, has
subpoenaed the Big Five Labels and
Publishers(SONY<BMG;EMI, etc., to determine their
relationship with "logged" air play.Radio, Tv and the
Performing Societies will play a role here and we've
brought this to the attention of the Attorney General.
We expect this drive to spread to other states'
Attorney Generals.
It now appears that our campaign is bearing
fruit and that the day is not far off when
songwriters, artists, musicians, independent
publishers and labels will get the recognition and
justice they need when they get a check for logged air
play, no matter how small the check!!
We have asked our friends in the media to follow
and publish this unique undertaking; as importantly as
a class action law suit would be in compensation for
songs aired for decades is our goal to change the way
aired songs are logged and credited so that, in the
future, all songs are properly credited no matter how
few are aired. Don't forget, this is the twenty first
Century; I think the technology is there to pay people
for the use of their intellectual properties.
Thanking you for your support,
I am,
Sincerely,
Jack Kavanagh, Publisher,

I'm on the Executive Board for the Press Club of
Long Island. This is one of SPJ's largest chapters. The annual Holiday
Show is December 2nd and we're accepting items for the auction to beneift
journalism in Long Island. Now, I can only accept items up until Nov. 26th as every year is a mad rush
to do this.
If you've not donated and are wondering why everybody is doing it, it's two
reason.Reason 1) It's a non-profit charity and therefore is tax-deductible
Reason 2) Your donation is not only listed in the letters before and after,
but the letters go to every journalist in the region and around. Some
publicists/marketing people found the idea of getting their story in front
of nearly all 1,000 journalists in the area a good thing to do. Sometimes I think Reason 2 weighs heavier in people's minds than Reason 1!
