SONG PUBLISHER'S PERSPECTIVE

SPECIAL - MUSIC MIDTOWN COVERAGE

I don't know how many readers saw the incredible live concert from Australia on NBC this month by the exciting Eagles. It was so refreshing to hear melodic music once again and what impressed me most was that their live presentations sounded exactly like their recordings. And to top it all off, they all shared the spotlight individually and every one of them provided superb support to the featured act, on every single song.

Personally, I've had to chew out certain artists along the way for adding new twists to their prior hits because they were tired of singing them the same old way, but trust me, that's NOT what the audience who paid good money to see them in person wanted. They came to see the acts do the songs the way they remembered them, and that's what The Eagles gave them - to the note. The musicianship was precise, dynamic and ultra professional. Forget the money aspect (I don't think they need it), but those guys were having fun and the audience could feel it.

The Eagles' success is really due to many factors. Firstly, it's four lead singers doing the vocals, not one lead singer and three back-up vocalists. Secondly, they have an identifiable musical sound. When you hear the intro, you know what's coming next. As the old saying went re: The Beatles - "Drop the needle anywhere on one of their albums and you knew it was The Beatles"...Same goes for The Eagles. And thirdly, and most important, the material was, is, and always will be well-written and memorable.

The Australian audience was also very receptive and respectful. I had the opportunity to perform there many moons ago, and each and every concert was so well-received that we couldn't wait to do the next show. It's been said that there's never a bad audience, only a bad show, and I've seen a few of these in my day.

Lastly, it was great that The Eagles named their concert tour "Farewell Tour #1". And I can't wait for "Farewell #2". It's gonna happen and the world will be waiting.

In closing, and to change the subject, Garth Brooks may think he's retired, but I'll betcha he'll be back. Once it's in your blood, it's hard to let go and as long as the talent is there, and an audience is waiting to hear you once again, go for it!! I recall that Frank Sinatra retired once, but not for long, and by the way, if there's an act reading this, and you have a future booking whereby you're going to Australia and/or New Zealand, look forward to it as it will be one of your most memorable experiences. My pal Damian Johnstone from Melbourne will surely be there enjoying it all
