When you're on the road with a well-known artist, the days can be lonely until showtime comes around. When I was with Guy Mitchell, who, at the time, had 19 million-sellers, I'd spend time during the day visiting music stores mainly to see if anything new had come in and invariably, when the store owners found out I was from L.A., they would ask if I knew the supreme jazz guitarist Barney Kessell and I'd always answer, "Yes. We're very good friends". It always surprised Barney when I would tell him that a music store owner in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois et al would know all about him. Barney was a humble man, who, sadly passed away in 2004, and just couldn't believe that these people knew his work. One of his greater pieces of work was the intro on Julie London's #1 song "Cry Me A River". And by the way, that superb record only had two instruments on it - Barney's guitar and a bass player. My second pastime on the road trips was looking at the local telephone book, gleaning for funny or unusual names. I can't remember what town it was, but I found a name that blew me away - it was Orbidor Dildotte. When I finally landed in the executive chair at Liberty/United Artists, there were a few higher-ups at other major labels in L.A. that (before the new position) I occasionally had an awful time trying to reach by phone. So, I thought I'd have some fun with their girl fridays. I'd call them and when they asked "Who may I say is calling?", I'd say "Orbidor Dildotte", and I swear that not once would they ask to repeat the name and put me right through to the producer or executive. And when they took the call (and discovered it was me), they laughed and said that their secretary butchered the name stating that they'd have to take a call from Uptidot Bildore or other such mis-states of the name. Before too long, all of my friends would start using that name and told me that it worked. Try it sometime and see what happens! :-> |
